Some of us strive to be anonymous, and Tumblr allows us to do exactly that. We flourish from the fact that nobody knows who we are. We get to control how much they can see into the depths of our morbid minds. Tumblr has opened doors to the development, duration, and recovery of eating disorders and self-harm. We no longer have to hide the pain, the grief, or the sorrow that consumes us each and every day of our sorry little lives.
This is Eva. She is 16 years old, 5’10”, and currently weighs 100 pounds. This is a picture of her at 91 pounds; her lowest weight. She suffers from anorexia and self-hatred. “I truly hope for my death before graduation. I don’t see myself going into college or university and actually becoming something successful. I don’t see myself getting married and being happy.” Eva is only one of the thousands of people suffering from an eating disorder. She, along with many others, shared her story on Tumblr in hopes of finding someone else out there like herself.
This is Jess. She is 18 years old and suffers from anorexia-nervosa. Anorexia-nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by pathological fear of becoming fat, emaciation, distorted body image, and excessive dieting. On Jess’s blog, she made an extraordinary remark that everyone struggling with a disease can relate to. She said, “I want to escape this illness, yet I am afraid to abandon this part of me.” This is where Tumblr starts to become a family. You find people helping others on their quest for happiness and encouraging them to get through one hour at a time.
This is Anonymous. She is 21 years old and she suffers from bulimia, anorexia-nervosa, epilepsy due to bulimia, borderline personality disorder, panic disorder with agoraphobia, and self-harm. She has attempted to commit suicide numerous times. The first time she made herself sick was when she was 11 years old. Due to her illnesses, she is now five years behind everyone else her age in terms of an education. She has been an in-patient and out-patient because of her instability. Despite all of her struggles, she is probably one of the most inspirational people I have ever talked to.
This is what Tumblr is about. It’s about connection, family, shelter, and security. Whether you choose to be anonymous or not, you will always find people who are willing to share their story with you. Tumblr helps you realize that you are not alone. There are plenty of others suffering with the same diseases. Tumblr has changed our generation by giving us hope. Hope for recovery, hope for liberation, and hope for a sound mind. Without Tumblr, I know for a fact that there would have been alot more teens committing suicide in 2011. If you are struggling with anything, please find help:
